The word COPASETIC originated in Chicago during Prohibition. Apparently some hotel was notorious for allowing prostitution, gambling and bootlegging. The situation was so bad the Chicago politicos decided to assign a full-time cop in the lobby. Early in the morning the cop would fall asleep on a sofa (also known as a settee). Peeps coming to the hotel would ask the lookout to find out if it was safe for them to enter the hotel. If the lookout replied, "The Cop is on the Settee," it meant that he was asleep and it was safe to enter the hotel. The phrase was used so much that it eventually was shortened to the version we know today as COPASETIC
